After a rash of knitting-disasters, the wonderful Pithy Hat has revitalized my zest for fiber.

Pattern: Pithy Hat, modded for bulky yarn use
Yarn: Mirasol Sulka (60% merino, 20% alpaca, 20%20 alpaca 20% silk)

Actually, not much. It's a wee bit too long in the back, but I can live with that.

I really really quite love this yarn. It does shed like a mad, moulting canary (hey, d'like my apropos simile there? eh? I try!), so I would personally only use it for accessory knitting.

pattern: Debbie Bliss, the baby knits book
yarn: Debbie Bliss alpaca silk (80% baby alpaca, 20% silk) in coral (#25010)
needles: 4.5 mm bamboo straights

A quick knit! I even did the little matching garter stitch hat to go with it. In the end it took me just over 7 balls of the alpaca silk, which is totally outrageous for a baby knit, but hopefully this little jacket will be enjoyed for a little while at least by my BFF's soon-to-be baby girl.

It's not 100% done as I still need to find/sew on some decent buttons for it:

The DB alpaca silk is GORGEOUS. I've got a couple of balls left of the same coral and plan to do a cowl or something with it, so that I too can be wrapped in it's silky fuzziness at all times!

I just finished Alpine Lace Scarf from Victorian Lace Today. It is a birthday gift for my mother in law. I really enjoyed working on this project. The central lace panel was very easy but the border kept me interested. I used two skeins of Misty Alpaca and cannot praise this yarn enough. I am certainly going to use it again. I mean, Mother's Day. lol I bought myself 2 and a half pounds of alpaca to spin this weekend. I'm very excited. This was (according to local "officials") the second best bagful. The very best had already been purchased, and it was white. Which, I realize, is better for dyeing and all. I don't want to dye it. I love naturally colored alpaca though. Too bad my camera is broken and you guys only get this pathetic picture, all of the other ones didn't even turn out.

Finally finished this vest! More details can be found on my blog if you're interested. I got a great deal on the yarn at pick up sticks. It was all 50% off, and it's the softest stuff I have ever knit with, so I kind of went a little crazy buying it, though I have a feeling they're all sold out of it at this point. Prices are in Canadian dollars so you should go over and check them out for all sorts of stuff. (Sorry, my little plug for pick up sticks, since I've had some really favourable experiences with them!)

And yes, I do actually wear this tacky polyester shirt!

I just finished this Misti Chunky Ribs & Ruffles scarf...

And currently have this "shaped scarf" on the needles, using an absolutely wonderful, native, natural color alpaca that I purchased at my LYS, A Knitter's Garden.

My Alpaca Project

I've finally thought of the perfect project for me to do for the Alpaca KAL. I met up with a group of local knitters at Starbucks last night and they are doing a KAL of sorts. The pattern is Branching Out by Susan Pierce Lawrence on Knitty.com. I have yarn left from first attempt at Ms. Marigold and wasn't sure what to do with it....this is fabulous. Plus - I think I can take a mini-break from Rusted Root for an hour or so tonight and cast on. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, here's a pic of my cat Hannah sleeping with my soon-to-be new lace scarf!

Update on my 1st Swallowtail Shawl

Here's a couple of pictures of my 1st Swallowtail Shawl using Misti Alpaca Lace:

I started this shawl on Mar 3, 2007 and finished it on Mar. 9, 2007. I'm planning on making the next one larger by doing 19 reps on chart 2 vs 14 reps. This was really fun to knit and the nupps were not as bad as I thought they were going to be. I used my working needle and a dpn held together when I did the yo's. This kept them loose enough to do the purl 5 tog on the next row, and it didn't slow me down that much.

My next Alpaca project will be a scarf from the Artic Lace book using Alpaca Cloud from Knitpicks.

Here are my first 2 alpaca FO's. Finished just as temps hit the 80's here in the midwest, wouldn't you know. I think I'll turn the AC down real low and take turns wearing them in the house! More details on my blog (you will have to scroll down a few days back).

I absolutely loved the turquoise Alpaca Baby Grande - it was very soft and silky, it seemed to just fly out of my fingers and onto the needles. And I loved everything about the chocolate Blue Skies Bulky alpaca, from the way it looked (like reggae dreadlocks), the way it smelled, the way it felt, the way it knitted. I am ordering more of this, as soon as I figure out what non-scarf item to make with it - maybe a ski band and mittens.

And here is the start of my new infatuation, some decadent plummy Big Baby from Alpaca With a Twist - my new most favorite. It's just made for the Yarn Harlot's One-Row Scarf pattern!

At long last, I've completed the Fair Isle U-Neck.

Specs:

Pattern: Fair Isle U-Neck from Vogue Knitting, Fall 2006
Yarn: Knit Picks Elegance
Time to complete: October 2006-March 2007
Things I'd change: The sleeves. I hate them. They're way too loose and baggy compared to the body. I'd also change that, too. The body's about 2 inches too big.

Despite what my "what I'd change" list says, I really do like the way the sweater turned out. The yarn is wonderful, very soft and smooth against the skin. The colours worked out alright as well.
When I make a second one (yes, I will! and I already have the yarn for it!) it's going to be smaller, and the sleeves will be 3/4 length instead of full-length.

This second photo shows the colours a bit better.

Thanks for inviting me to join your KAL! I have just finished the Swallowtail Shawl from IK Fall 2006 using Misti Alpace Lace in Cranberry. Here's a picture of it in the blocking stage. This is a cool pattern and I will be making another. I have 2 skeins of Misti Alpaca Lace in Sea Mist, I may use them for the Shetland Triangle or Ene's Scarf...not sure yet.

New to the KAL

Hello everyone. My name is Susan, aka Knitters-Delight and I found this KAL through a few bloggers that are on my daily read list. I am currently finishing up Wendy Bernard's Not-So-Shrunken Cardigan, which I'm using merino wool for. After this, I'm planning on starting her Fad Classic in Debbie Bliss' Alpaca Silk DK in a gorgeous wine color. I had previously tried to use the yarn for Ms. Marigold, but it got completely tangled on me and I lost at least 2 skeins. Since this is a smaller amount needed for the Fad Classic, I'm trying to use the yarn again. I also bought a ball winder and I'll re-wind it so that it pulls from the center.

Introducing myself

Hello all,

I just joined this KAL and thought introductions were in order. I went back into the archives and found this intro questionaire and thought I'd start with that. So, here goes...

1. How did you find this KAL?
I was surfing the 'net and found the 2007 Knit Alongs and Swaps website. I saw this one there.

2. What do you plan on making with your Alpaca fiber? Crocheting, knitting, or spinning? If knitting or crocheting give us details on the yarn! I am currently working on the Spinner's Shawl by Fibertrends. It is my first shawl project and I have just barely started. It is being knit with Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud in Tide Pool, a lace weight yarn. After that, I have a sock of the month kit (from way too long ago...) that is called something like Celtic Cables. The yarn for it is Misti Alpaca lace weight in a medium kelly green. There might be an alpaca spinning project in the future, but I have too many UFOs right now to start something new.

3. Have you worked with Alpaca before? If so, your favorite past project knit with Alpaca? I have worked with alpaca once before. I knit a pair of socks with Knit Picks Andean Treasure. They are so soft. I love alpaca.

4. What is your absolute favorite Alpaca yarn? What weight do you prefer working with? I have only used these three different yarns. I like the medium weight yarns, sport weight, but apparently keep finding lace weight projects.

5. What sorts of things would you like to see this group do? Would you like any contests, prizes, surveys, swaps? Any of the above would be great.

I was lucky enough to receive some fabulous Blue Skies bulky alpaca in deep chocolate brown for the February Color Swap 2007. It is seriously bulky and seriously soft and reminds me of dreadlocks. I want to knit a scarf for myself and since I have 90 yards and like a long scarf, I thought I'd come up with a pattern using stripes in different colors of baby Alpaca Grande (doubled) and Rowan bulky merino (doubled). I wanted to knit the Blue Skies yarn in a seed stitch and the stripes in either seed or garter. The problem is that I am getting very obvious color "bumps" on one side. I am frustrated because I don't like the way it looks - I want clean lines on both sides - but no matter which stitch I use, I keep getting these bumps. Does anyone know what kind of stitch or other technique I could use to eliminate or minimize these bumps and get distinct edges on both sides? Thanks for any help I can get.

Must Speak Up

I have my alpaca shawl on hold for the moment, what with all my other knitting I *must* get done before I dare cast on for it.

However, this afternoon, while out on a stroll along the muddied snow street of this fair little burg, I discovered I have to knit something else for myself, and very soon. I must knit myself a wide enough, thick enough, LONG enough scarf. As if I haven't been out in worse weather at all this entire winter. For some reason today, wearing my nice thick, but rather short, alpaca blend scarf that I made months ago for no real reason other than I had left over bits of alpaca/cotton blend yarn and wanted to see what they looked like together (lovely really).
I knitted up this 38 inch scarf, using red, black and white alpaca/cotton blend bulky yarn, as I had nothing better to do and the balls of yarn were leftovers from someone else's projects--and I figured well, why not.
I adore the scarf. I've not worn this scarf this year til now. I need one about this thick (roughly 10/11 inches wide), just....longer. Even blended with cotton, the scarf today was wicked warm, except where the wind streaked in under the edges as I could not properly loop it around my neck to keep the wind out.
I have I believe it is called Indica alpaca yarn, 100%, one lone skein, and it is calling to be blended, with who knows what at this moment, to create a very long very lovely scarf to keep me warm, no matter what.

So, first I shall need to go stash diving. My skein of Indica is sports weight (so says the label, but it is REALLY thin for sports weight, I say) and it is dark grey. (It also cost me $1 in the sale bin at my lys as it was the sole remaining skein of that colour when I happened in one day). Then, I shall go--pattern diving. Something simple is all I require at the moment, simple and yet--divine. :-) Or at least cute, ok? :-)

I'll let you know where I end up. I probably won't go stash diving until tomorrow. I have comfort shawl to finsih before I commence anything for myself.

Hi,

I'm a newbie here, and this is my first KAL of any kind~ I'm a relatively new knitter, but I'm loving alpaca, so I thought I'd post my first attempt at knitting with it.

I just finished this cowl a couple weeks ago:

So that's it inside out, though I kinda like it that way. I'm wearing it with pretty much everything --It's like a giant necklace! I'm not super crazy about the colour ("mist"), so I definitely plan to make another, it was a very, VERY easy knit. Kinda tedious, really, just endless purling. Pattern and yarn both from Fable HandKnits and it is 100% baby alpaca, just about the softest yarn I've ever knit with.

I bought the yarn from Pick up Sticks, which I believe is Vancouver based (I'm Canadian...) and I think the yarn itself is also from a Canadian company (for those of you who appreciate all the details!)

I've also since bought a whack more of this fabulous yarn in other colours (it's currently half price!), and have cast on the "Gilmore Vest" from the same Fable Handknits site, so that'll be my next alpaca project...I'll be sure to post photos of it once it's completed, which might be awhile...

So, that's my introduction, I look forward to reading up on what everyone else is knitting with alpaca, and checking out all your blogs as well!

My reality-based name is Katie, but in Blogland, I am known as "Criquette". I have only been knitting for about 1 year and love making scarves and hats. I have also knit a kitty pi bed. And now that I have actually constructed small garments made of both knit and purl stitches (sometimes in the same garment!) I am ready to start branching out. Alpaca is, so far, the softest yarn I have worked with and I want more, more, more!!! I thought this group would be a fun place to learn my next steps.

1. How did you find this KAL?
On the KAL 2007 website. I like the idea of focusing on yarn instead of a specific project.

2. What do you plan on making?
I hope to make a cabled scarf (maybe Irish Hiking scarf), a pair of mitts, and perhaps a shawl in a feather-and-fan pattern. All will be knitted. I have crocheted for most of my life, but much prefer knitting now.

3. Have you worked with alpaca before?
Yes! I made several hats for a local charity and a scarf using Paton's Rumor yarn, which is an acrylic/alpaca blend. It was budget-friendly and knitted up quickly into my SIL's President's Day gift - you can read more about it here .

But, that little mix just wasn't enough - I immediately went and bought myself some skeins of the real thing - Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande # 3347 and made myself a lushly decadent scarf - this is the first item I have knitted for myself and I love it!

I used Yarn Harlot's "One-Row Handspun Scarf" pattern (scroll down to the 10/12/06 entry) using #11 Clover bamboo needles and am very happy with the drape and texture. I have only to sew in the ends, block and wash her and then I'll be praying for some more cold weather so I can get a few wearings out of her this winter!

4. What is your favorite alpaca yarn? What weight do you prefer working with?
I' m not ready to commit to a favorite since I don't know what else is out there! ;) In general, I like to work with worsted weight and somewhat bulkier yarns. This could have a lot to do with my need for projects that do not strain my tiny attention span and reward me with fast results OR it could be because I like the more substantial feeling from the thicker yarns as it glides through my fingers.

5. What sorts of things would you like to see this group do?
Motivate, educate and entertain each other. I'd like to see the group participate in a charity project together - Red Scard Project, Dulaan, or something similar. Knitters can save the world!

6. Would you like any contests, prizes, surveys, swaps?
I am open to any or all of the above and will happily donate a prize if a contest involving a charity project were to occur.

I will be posting the responses to the Al-KAL meme on my blog, Prairie Gumbo, later tonight. I've started reading everyone's blogs and want to say that you all seem like a really fun bunch of knitters and I am looking forward to getting to know you.

Better late than never..
It's been awhile since i joined this kal--and I am still stymied with a pattern--but I am getting there. Lots of things going on at home as well I won't bore you with (think--divorce,with children involved--that should be warning enough)

1. How did you find this KAL?

2. What do you plan on making with your Alpaca fiber? Crocheting, knitting, or spinning?
If knitting or crocheting give us details on the yarn!
I want to make myself a faroese shawl--but not an overly lacy one or anything
I have actually (see I must be mad) considered making an EZ pi shawl!
hence the pattern stymie--I will be knitting it
I have to figure out where I have hidden my stash of alpaca--I have it bagged up on its own, sitting on a shelf where I cannot reach it so I won't just sit and stare and pet it.
The yarn is a bulky weight (yes, I am still sure I want to make the shawl :-) ) 50/50 alpaca cotton blend
I have several colours of it--I think I have enough off white to make a whole shawl with no problem, but I also have some black and green, in case I want to stripe it--or embellish it--or make something entirely different with it

3. Have you worked with Alpaca before? If so, your favorite past project knit with Alpaca? I have used many different alpaca blends before--and I ahve one lone skein of 100% alpaca sitting in my knittig basket (this is the one I take out and pet alot)--it's dark grey and 110 yds--and cost me $1.50 at the lys as it was the last skein--and I had to have it--even if it is fingering weight!
I have several alpaca blend hats and scarves I have made, and so do many friends and family members (those who are not allregic) and due to a distinct error on my part while making a head scarf one of my 5yo dd's dolls has a quite lovely alpaca shawl/blanket as well
Actually the most fun I had was making that darned doll shawl--although I was most upset to hand it over to a doll who normally sleeps under a pillow anyway!

4. What is your absolute favorite Alpaca yarn? What weight do you prefer working with? if it has alpaca in it--I am a very happy girl
I have been to alpaca farms (and one day I swear I shall have my own--and not just so I have to learn how to shear and spin either--although those are perks for me :-) )
Right now I actually prefer to knit with hand spun and worsted weight
it's cold here in MD between the mountain peaks (we do literally live in a valley between 2 mountains) and the dry chill air bothers my hands alot--so it's easier right now to work with somewhat thicker yarns
although in warmer climes I enjoy sports weight yarns as well

5. What sorts of things would you like to see this group do? you mean other than support one another? lol
I enjoy all sorts of kals and swaps and exchanges

Eyelet Blouse

Hi Ladies,
I have finished my alpaca Eyelet Blouse from the latest Vogue Knitting. It did not even take me so long (I usually have several projects on my needles), which means this KAL is working as a good motivation. I enjoyed knitting it even though I had a hard time putting this piece together as it consists of too many parts for my taste. I used Knitpicks Ambrosia, 80% alpaca-20% cashmere blend and here are a few thoughts about that yarn:
I loved working with it. It feels very soft, slides nicely through my fingers, does not split and knits pretty evenly. When I put the blouse on though, I realized that unfortunately it does itch a little even though my skin is not particularly sensitive to wool or alpaca. I haven`t blocked it yet, but I hope blocking will somewhat soften it. If not I will have to find some cami to wear under. Some more pictures and details are on my blog .

Hey Ladies! I have finished my alpaca project. It was simple really, just a hat made with chunky alpaca. Here it is!!
The hat was too small for me but it fit the DH perfectly!!Story behind the pic is that DH doesn't like his face on the internet. I told him that I wanted to just take a pic of him from his eyes up just to show off the hat. So he made himself a little black bar to cover his eyes. He's such a smart ass!
He loves the hat. What do you ladies think?
I can't wait to get my hands on some more alpaca! I've loved knitting with the chunky style now I may try a blend.

2. What do you plan on making with your Alpaca fiber? Bulky Green Cables in Rowan Plaid (an alpaca/wool blend)in Sea Thistle, Endpaper Mitts in Blue Sky Alpaca Silk in Chocolate (kindly gifted to me by knitdevil) and Turquoise and some socks using Januarys Fyberpates Sock Club yarn.

Alright, so, after reading through the posts and most of your personal blogs, I have set up a few things for us.

First, I want to do a small contest to encourage commenting. This will be a bit of a wait, and totally random, but still exciting. Just, comment here on the blog at some point or another (the more you comment, the more likely you will be to win!) in the next two months. That's all. Of course, there have to be posts to comment on. ;) The winner will be selected at random.

The second thing will take a bit more organizing from me, but I want to set up a review. I will email each of you individually and ask you to submit a review of the yarn you are currently using. & I'm quickly becoming an Alpaca addict.

I don't only knit with alpaca; it would be too warm for a sweater for me, not durable enough for socks or a purse, but for any other accessories I'm game. (depending, of course, on my paycheque that week!)

1. How did you find this KAL?

- along with everyone else, it seems, through the wonderful 2007 KAL list. (what a wonderful person, whoever organized that!)

2. What do you plan on making...etc.?

- I have the Liesel scarf on the needles as we speak (type)
- I have some Alacama left and I'm not sure yet what I want to use it for
- I'm sure other things will crop up as time goes by (maybe a shawl!)

3. Have you worked with alpaca before? & Favourite finished object?

- I made Fetching fingerless mitts with Alacama from Araucania Yarns. Lovely to work with and they look lovely. I may give them to my co-worker Leah (since she admires them so much) as a congratulatory gift for getting a scholarship to Fairleigh Dickinson University! Besides, I have enough for another pair in the same yarn if I miss them too much.

4. Favourite alpaca yarn?

- I probably can't afford the heavier weight yarns! I do like fingering weight and might try a lace weight shawl later this year. I must say I love the Noble yarn from Michell which is 90% alpaca, 10% something-in-Spanish.

5. Things to Do?

- I'm open...I would probably be more into contests & surveys than swaps...and everyone is into prizes. :)

I'm always terrible at intros, so I'm going to wimp out and instead present my answers to a couple of surveys posted earlier in this blog :)

1. How did you find this KAL?

2. What do you plan on making with your Alpaca fiber? Crocheting, knitting, or spinning? If knitting or crocheting give us details on the yarn!
I currently have a fair isle sweater (the one from VK fall 2006) on the needles. Sad thing is, I haven't touched it since October! It's about halfway up the back, and looks alright so far. I have nothing but absolute praise for the alpaca/silk blend that I'm using. It's Knit Picks Elegance.

I also need to make myself another pair of fingerless gloves (my own silly, meandering pattern) with the buttery-soft Elsebeth Lavold ClassicAL. My first pair, after having served bravely for 2 winters in a row, have finally developed undeniable holes in the thumbs. The second pair won't have thumbs, most definately!

Finally, there's this giant afghan that I've been meaning to start for ages now. It's pretty far down the list of project priorities now!

3. Have you worked with Alpaca before? If so, your favorite past project knit with Alpaca?
So far the only completed project I've made with alpaca are my fingerless mitts with Elsebeth ClassicAL. Mmm, I love that yarn!

4. What is your absolute favorite Alpaca yarn? What weight do you prefer working with?
I am *blushingly* ignorant of alpaca! I hope to broaden my horizons with this KAL.

Great question! So far I'm grappling with the mountain of WIPs that I have. I really love swaps, though, and contests and prizes are always fun!

A day later than promised

...but I do have the promised pictures of my current alpaca WIP: (Forgive the crappy photography, I'm clearly not as gifted with my camera as with my needles.) This first picture shows the true color.

I have completed the back of the jacket and I am seriously diggin' on the mini cabled armhole decreases. Tres decorative I think. I am loving this pattern with this yarn so very much more than the other one. It is destined to be my comfy sweater for years to come. BTW the very center has a 2 purl rib which lends a wonky line in it's current raw unblocked state. see what I mean?

Crap, Crap, double Crap!

Well, that knock around pullover I was working on from Weekend Knitting...Ain't happening! After finishing both center sections and casting on for the yoke/sleeves it dawned on me...Y'know...this big horizontal section across the already ample breastage is going to do nothing for me, DUH! I was feeling meh about the way the yarn was working up at the correct gauge anyway, and then the pattern wording got me all turned around, the construction is a little too wonky-fried for my taste so Phooey! I frogged it and started something new.
I also need to answer the questionaire which I sorta' neglected to do before!

2. What do you plan on making with your Alpaca fiber? I am now knitting a cashmere zippered jacket from VK Fall 04'...only in alpaca. I'm going to have to order more yarn, (Knitpicks Decadence-100% alpaky, supposedly bulky but more like heavy worsted in my opinion), but what the hell, right. Better to have something I'll actually wear, than something else to stack on the closet shelf.

3. Have you worked with Alpaca before? If so, your favorite past project knit with Alpaca? Yes, yes, yes! I adore ze alpaca! I'm really in love with a baby hat & bootie set I made for my baby in Atacama Alpaca in a loverly purple colorway. My clapotis is in laceweight alpaca that I'm quite fond of as well,

4. What is your absolute favorite Alpaca yarn? What weight do you prefer working with? I could no sooner pick a favorite star in the sky. Alpaca for me is like buttercream frosting...anything with a little dollop in there is mmmm, mmmm, good.

My name is Anna and I live in Brunswick, Maine. I was recently organizing my stash (as a part of my decision to go on a yarn diet for some time) and realized that I have more Alpaca or Alpaca blend than any other fiber. I also have a few Alpaca projects on my needles that I need to finish. I hope this KAL will motivate me to do so. I do like this fiber but I tend to get sidetracked by other projects.

I have made a few sweaters using Alpaca yarn and a Shetland Triangle from Wrap Style using Knitpicks Alpaca Cloud. I finished it a while ago but I liked the finished result very much so I am posting a picture. The laceweight Alpac really feels like a cloud.
4. What is your absolute favorite Alpaca yarn? What weight do you prefer working with?
I don`t have absolute favorites so far but I do enjoy knititng with Ambrosia (80%Alpaca,20% cashmere blend in sport weight).

Contests would be fun. Surveys or everybody`s opinion about the Apaca yarn they are using, project ideas etc. would be very useful. I am mostly looking for inspiration and anxious to see what everyone is working on.

2. What do you plan on making with your Alpaca fiber? Crocheting, knitting, or spinning? If knitting or crocheting give us details on the yarn! So far, I have the Bejeweled scarf that I am knitting (mentioned in a previous post). Then I discovered a UFO that I started years ago. It is a crocheted scarf using a silk/alpaca blend from Cascade. (I'm not sure the yarn is still available.) I also intend to make a shawl from Doris Chan's Amazing Crochet Lace using Berroco Ultra Alpaca. If I get all that done, then I want to go through my stash of alpaca and alpaca blends and decide on some more projects to do this year.
3. Have you worked with Alpaca before? If so, your favorite past project knit with Alpaca? I'm not sure that I have ever finished anything made from alpaca yarn. I may find some more UFOs, though!
4. What is your absolute favorite Alpaca yarn? What weight do you prefer working with? I don't really have a favorite alpaca yarn yet. I probably prefer working with ww, but I have yarn in my stash in every weight from lace to ww. My only real preference is that I don't particularly like bulky yarns.

I am happy to join your ranks. I live for alpaca and think it is the most loverly stuff in the universe.

I am beginning with this knock-around pullover from weekend knitting using Knitpicks Decadence in tan, but I'm not sure if I like the way it is knitting up at the required guage. I may order some lace weight alpaca to knit along with it to maybe beef it up. Any opinions?

Yes, I tried to resist the urge that is Alpaca and failed miserably. Project Spectrum doesn't start until the first of February, and yet I find myself working on one of my projects for it. It was just supposed to be a swatch but the yarn is so delectable that I couldn't stop! My hands just cast-on this raglan by themselves, I swear. Even the stitch markers fit in with PS, they are blue and white. Of course, the only other color I had was pink.

I also received my KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud for the lace cropped tee I'll be working on in April/May. It's not as yellow as I had hoped. Of course, that's okay by me, I'm not really into yellow. It still qualifies as yellow as far as I'm concerned. Check out my blog for more info as to what I'll be doing with those other yarns.

Hello! I'm Rose, and I've been knitting for a little over a year now- and acquired quite the stash in the process! But my stash is mostly wool, and I was tickled pink when my dh got me 7 hanks of this for Christmas:

I am currently working on this v-neck vest from Knit Simple Fall '06 (not the best picture of it, sorry). The back is complete, but I got sidetracked with my merino tam. Hopefully I can get the front started tonight after my kiddos hit the sack...

(the yarn used above is NOT alpaca. blech. slubby brown yuckiness)
I must say that working with this yarn is heavenly. So ultra soft, knits up really quickly, and great yardage for the price. (roughly 110 yds/$13 US.) I highly recommend it so far. I'll post a pic. of the final product sometime this week, hopefully!

I absolutely love swaps, but I have a hard time committing to anything much larger than a hat or small bag. With two kids and full time biology classes at the university, I get stressed at any commitment much larger. (I ADORE swapping hanks or skeins of something new.... *wink*) Contests are also fun!

1. How did you find this KAL? Through the 2007 KnitAlong website.
2. What do you plan on making with your Alpaca fiber? Various items are planned. As I said previously I plan to knit an alpaca sweater. I'm sure that at some time during the year I'll knit more fingerless mittens. Those are a quick filler project and they are great to have on hand as gifts. Since I came up with my own pattern I'll probably sell some in my farm store. I have quite a bit of undyed yarn on hand that I will dye for scarves and maybe a couple of lace projects. After shearing and show season are over I'll spin some of JJ Jaxson's fleece. He is a light fawn that was born to our farm this year and has amazing fiber. The color is on the peachy side.
3. Have you worked with Alpaca before? I've been working with alpaca for about 3 1/2 years and am addicted.
4. What is your absolute favorite Alpaca yarn? Other than my handspun I'd have to say The Alpaca Yarn Company and Blue Sky Alpaca. I like the way they are processed. Some mills do not remove enough of the guard hairs and the resulting yarn has to much itch factor. These two companies have done a good job eliminating itch. What weight do you prefer working with? I prefer sport and DK but love it all.
5. What sorts of things would you like to see this group do? Would you like any contests, prizes, surveys, swaps? Mainly encourage each other and spread the word about alpaca. I'd really like to see all the myths proven to be just that, myth. Elasticity is still the one that gets me the most. Quality alpaca fiber has great crimp. Crimp = elasticity. Breeders have done a tremendous job in the last few years breeding desirable fiber characteristics into the North American herd. The result is more premium yarn is hitting the market. Contest and prizes are always fun. I'm not much into the whole swap process.

This Shawl was finished all except for blocking before this KAL began but I thought since it's now officially done that it would be ok to post it here. It is the Swallow Tail Shoulder Shawl from IK (I forget which issue now). It was knit in Blue Sky Alpaca 100% Alpaca sportweight on size 7US circs. To see more pictures visit the Swallow Tail Knitalong pages. I'll be posting there after I finish up here. This shawl is very drapey and soft. It will probably become a gift next Christmas.

Also, a cropped lace tee from IK summer 06 in KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud. A pale yellow for the April/May months of Project Spectrum. The biggest project will be a sweater for my husband in Elsebeth Lavold Classic Al. Apparently men aren't a fan of color and stick with natural or neutral colors.

3. Have you worked with Alpaca before? If so, your favorite past project knit with Alpaca?

My ver first ever hat. Knit with Blizzard in, I think the color was tan?

4. What is your absolute favorite Alpaca yarn? What weight do you prefer working with?
This is tough, and I know a few of you own Alpacas and spin your own. I guess I generally prefer a DK weight, but I do love that Blizzard yarn. It's soft and warm!

5. What sorts of things would you like to see this group do? Would you like any contests, prizes, surveys, swaps?
I'm running this, but I really want some input from my participants. Doing some swaps or contests sounds like a fun idea to me, and I don't think I'd be totally opposed. Tutorials would be nice if you can think of anything we would need tutorials on.

Hi, my name is Priscilla and I'm an alpaca lover! I joined last week, and it finally occurred to me that I should stop by and introduce myself. Usually, I hang out at my blog, By Hook or Needles.

Since I found this KAL, I have realised that I have alpaca or alpaca blends in my stash in every weight from lace to worsted, but that I don't have many finished projects to show for myself. So hopefully this will help me to reduce my stash and add some alpaca FOs to my name!

I had thought that my first project was going to be the "Blue Curacao Shawl" from Doris Chan's Amazing Crochet Lace, in Berroco's Ultra Alpaca in a heathered blue colorway. But I have decided to save that for February and make it my first Project Spectrum project. So instead, I have started a "Bejeweled" scarf in Nashua Handknits' Ivy. It is a wool/alpaca blend with a silver thread running through it, and as soon as I found it at Webs a few weeks ago, I knew it would be perfect for Bejeweled. It must be a fairly new yarn, however, because the company's website is still under construction.

I can't wait to see what everyone else is up to!

I've got a couple of projects planned for February. The most challenging one will be a top-down raglan in Alpaca Seta. It's grey though, and is going to be part of my Project Spectrum knits. This yarn is beautiful and I have wanted to knit something with it for awhile. I figure a top-down raglan will give me more opportunity to fit it as I go.

Does anyone have any reccomendations for a good Alpaca fingering or laceweight? I want to make the Icarus shawl.

What a wonderful idea. I've actually thought of doing this before but just never had the time to follow through with it. So glad that someone got it started. I raise alpacas on our small farm in Tennessee and think their fiber is the greatest. I hear stories on blogs all the time about how alpaca can't be used for one type of project or another. I think you just have to get to know its characteristics to properly use it to its fullest. Contrary to popular belief it can be used in projects with cables. You just have to know that if you're going to knit cables don't use a worsted or heavier yarn. It is best to use say a sportweight. I hope that we can dispell some of the myths and get others to learn to appreciate this fiber the way that those of us that work with it now do.

I am about to embark on a sweater project using an alpaca silk blend. It will be the Shocking! Jacket from IK winter 2004. It is a Veronik Avery design. The hard part is deciding which color to use. There are about five that really call to me.

I'm looking forward to seeing what others will be doing with their alpaca fiber.

Inspired by a picture posted on Lolly's flickr and blog, I have decided to start an Alpaca-along. This is a generally open KAL. The only real rule is you must do something with Alpaca! Spin it, knit it, crochet it. I don't care. Blends are permissable.

I think I might get more in depth with this later, but for now, just email me if you want to join. Post about your yarn, pattern, and loves of Alpaca! My idea is to have a list of the different patterns/objects and yarns we are all using. If you have any suggestions/questions put them in your email. Subject line should read Alpaca along, so I don't accidentally delete it.

Email should also include:
Your name
Email address
Your blog/website name (if you have one)
Yarn you are using (including details: weight, yardage, color, etc)
Pattern you are using (or object you are knitting)
